September 17,18 - Intro to Navigation Skills - Winnipeg

Feel comfortable travelling off road by land or water. This course is designed for the first time navigator or someone wishing to brush up their skills. The indoor clinic will introduce the basic terminology, techniques of successful navigation. If you choose to come to the outdoor clinic as well (which we highly recommend) we will get right into the bush and put some of these new skills into practice!

INDOOR CLINIC - Wednesday September 17, 6:30 pm
LOCATION: Wilderness Supply Winnipeg 623 Ferry Rd
COST: $20.00 or $35 for both

Course Overview:

  • Read and interpret topographic maps
  • Understand and plot 6 digit UTM co-ordinates
  • Learn how to orient your map, take a bearing on land and how to transfer it to your map
  • Understand navigation terminology such as: back bearing, line of sight, aiming off, catching, features/handrails, etc.
  • Navigation strategy and common sense tips

OUTDOOR CLINIC - Thursday September 18, 6:30 pm
LOCATION: NW Parking Lot of Assiniboine Forest (Corner of Grant and Chalfont)
COST: $15 or $35 for both (must attend the indoor session before attending the outdoor clinic)

Course Overview:

  • Observe the effects of drift
  • Plot straight line bearings
  • Put into practice navigational techniques learned in the indoor session
  • Learn how to travel effectively and quickly through bush and uneven terrain
  • Learn how to use your companions to increase the accuracy of your navigation
