For the month of May we have teamed up with Powerview School Wilderness Voyageurs to help them collect usable gear for youth canoeing programs.
When you drop-off gently used gear to our Winnipeg store, you are not only getting a store discount coupon, you are helping support kids get outside.
Powerview School is located where the Winnipeg River meets Lake Winnipeg. Geographically situated in Powerview-Pine Falls, our school is home not only to students from this small town, but also to our larger community of Sagkeeng First Nation and Black River First Nation.
Despite the proximity of spectacular hiking, camping, and paddling opportunities, many of our students have never spent a night in a tent, or paddled a canoe due to limited resources.
We have been so blessed to be able to share camping experiences with our students. As they share traditional knowledge and stories, we share our wilderness experience and engage students in conversation about environmental sustainability and protecting our waterways and forests.
Our community, school administration and school division are very supportive of our program. Our stance is that financial barriers will never get in the way of our students being able to go on these trips. However, there continue to be financial limitations which restrict our program. We are currently relying on gear rental for canoe trailers, tents, packs, barrels and much of our cooking gear.
Our students often do not have appropriate outdoor gear. We rely on rentals for rain gear, clothing, proper footwear and sleeping bags and mats.
Our goal is to be a self-sustainable program by June of 2021. This means we need to collect the above-mentioned gear and clothing to lend our students in order to cut costs on rentals.
Your support means our students can continue to grow and learn outdoors. The benefits of creating a future population of environmentalists is immeasurable.
THANK YOU!
